Xandros and Microsoft signed an agreement to open source
Microsoft, the largest software manufacturer worldwide, announced on Monday an agreement on patent, technology and marketing with the open source distributor Xandros, the second of its kind to reach the compaía.
Microsoft and Xandros have committed to providing customers with enhanced interoperability solutions for more effective management systems and assurance of intellectual property, all of them increasing the bridge between open source and commercial software and the deployment of real value to clients in mixed systems environments.
For Xandros, the agreement represents the crowning achievement in his vision for the deployment of complete solutions for Linux desktop and server, plus the management tools and interoperability of Linux and Windows platforms.
The pact is similar to five years that Microsoft signed with Novell last year, when he said he wanted to enter into similar pacts with other open source vendors.
That agreement includes a clause that Microsoft will not be able to sue Novell Linux customers. Still, upset some in the open source community who feared that Microsoft will use it to support intellectual property claims against others. Therefore, the agreement with Xandros, which sells desktop versions of Linux, also includes patent protections for customers of the distributor of open source.
"The current COMPANIES are based on a mixture of Linux and Windows systems," said Andreas Typaldos, CEO of Xandros.
"The data centers of the platform are a reality. To address the growing demand from customers, vendors need to recognize the value of sharing intellectual property, developing more interoperable solutions and providing management tools that are familiar and easy to use, "he concluded.
