Wikipedia migrated 400 servers to Linux Ubuntu
Wikipedia has taken the decision to abandon its combination of Red Hat and Fedora Linux Ubuntu to change it. Wikipedia has 10 million articles in 250 languages and is one of the 10 most visited websites in the world.
One reason for this change was that they did not want to pay Red Hat for support in their software solutions. Ubuntu Linux is frequently updated and nothing works better than apt package manager.
According to Vibber, CTO of the Wikimedia Foundation:
We had a mixture of things, some Red Hat 9, some Fedora - several different versions. The group used an installation procedure to measure, but felt that having a multitude of versions is more difficult to maintain for its small staff of five IT people around the world. Transfer to migrate everything to Ubuntu is done with the objective of making our own administration and maintenance easier. We decided that we want to standardize on something.
